Carlisle Summerfair 2008 Events

Anything Floats - (Forms can be found on the DOWNLOAD tab.) Do you think your team can design a boat made from anything and everything, but still has what it takes to stay afloat and win the race? This is your opportunity to prove it. Come out to Children's Lake in Boiling Springs and enjoy the event or register to participate. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. A food/drink stand will be there. Crafts are to be made of floating materials, man made, and motorless. Please note that life jackets are required. There are 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 person races which each having first, second, and third place trophies. Craft inspection is at 8 to 10:30 AM and the races start at 11 AM in 2007 (NOTE NEW TIME). Apple Pie Contest - For Amateur bakers only. Requirements: No store bought pastry shells, main ingredient must be apples of any variety. No tarts or crisps. Entry must include 1 copy of your recipe. All ingredients must be listed on the recipe and must be typed or printed on a 3x5 index card with your name, address and phone#. Pies must be in disposable 8 to 10 inch pans. One entry per person please. Prizes: Adults (18 and up) and Juniors (17 & under) - First place and runner up. Judgin will be based on appearance, taste, and texture. Bring your pie to the table on the right side of the stage at the craft show on Saturday, July 5th from 11:00 am to 11:45am. Judging is from noon to 12:30.

Around the Town Bike Ride - Think you know Carlisle? Look at the town from a different view point -- from the seat of a bicycle! Meet up with other bicycle riders in the Allison United Methodist Church parking lot for a unique tour of the town. Please note: helmets are required.

Baby Races - Let's go Baby! Bring your crawler out to Rush Campus during the craft show at 1 PM to race other area babies for the bragging rights and other small prizes for having the fastest baby in town. (Babies can't be walking yet).

Children's Art Activities - During the craftshow on Saturday, from 10 to noon, there will be free children's art projects at the minifestival (near the left hand side of the stage in the shade) on Dickinson College's Rush Campus.

Craft Show - (Applications are on the DOWNLOADS tab) Approximately 100 vendors fill Dickinson College's Rush Campus with their handmade and unique crafts on Saturday July 5th from 8:30AM till 3:30. In case you work up an appetite while shopping, don't worry...there are also plenty of food services supplied by local non-profit groups. Also during the afternoon, various groups are scheduled to perform for your family's enjoyment.

Courthouse Tours - Did you know that Carlisle is the county seat for Cumberland County? Come check out the old courthouse! The "old" courthouse tours will be on the hours from 9 am to noon and learn the history of some of the most famous trials to ever happen in Cumberland County.

Fishing Derby - Here Fishy, Fishy, Fishy! Bring the kids (ages 4-12) out to Letort Park on Saturday, from 8 to 10 AM for the Carlisle Summerfair Fishing Derby. Children can fish for trout and are awarded trophies in each age group for the first fish caught, longest fish caught, the shortest caught, and the longest combined total length of 4 fish. All children must register between 7am and 8am. Fish donated from the Yellow Breeches Anglers ( www.ybac.homestead.com ).

Harrisburg Symphony - Enjoy an evening of fine music by the Harrisburg Symphony (www.harrisburgsymphony.org) and twinkling fireflies on the Rush Campus at Dickinson College on Sunday evening at 7:30PM. Bring your lawnchairs or a blanket. The rain site is the Carlisle Theatre. Rain decision info will be posted the day of the event by 3 PM.

Ice Cream Social - Tempt your tastebuds after the Carlisle Summerfair Parade on Friday at the square in Carlisle. Free ice cream products provided by Nells Surfine Markets will be available immediately after the parade.

Jim Thorpe Track Meet - Hey kids! Come out to Carlisle High School track and show us your athletic talent. Please note: Parent or legal guardian must sign waivers for all minors. Also, pre-registration is requested this year to make the event run smoother. Please be on time for registration 30 minutes immediately before the event!

Miniature Golf Tournament - So your not a pro golfer....you don't have to be. This event is open for free to the general public at Duffy's Miniature Golf, 1454 Harrisburg Pike, Carlisle. Come and show what you've got in mini golf.

911 Tours / Emergency Displays - Where does your call go when you dial 911? Check out the 911 Center located interestingly enough in the Cumberland County Prison Basement on Claremont Road. 11:30 am - 12:30pm STAT MedEvac will land followed by a vehicle extrication and rescue demonstratoin with live victims. In the afternoon, there will be a blood hound demo followed by a police patrol dog demonstration. At 2:30 PM the Penn State Life Lion Aeromedical will land followed by a vehicle extrication and rescue demonstration with live victims.

All day events: Tour the 911 Communications Mobile Unit and practice making an emergency 911 call, Tour the hazardous materials and decontamination units, Meet Sparky the Fire Dog, see the DARE car, get a free blood pressure screening, get a free child's safety seat inspection.
Try on Fatal Vision Goggles, experience the misting tent that is used to keep emergency workers cool, and learn how to react in a smoke-filled environment by touring the smoke house.

Parade - (2008 parade entry forms can be found under the DOWNLOAD tab.) Come on out and celebrate the opening of the Carlisle Summerfair on Thursday, July 3rdth at 7pm. The parade starts above Veterans Square in Carlisle and goes down Hanover Street. The theme for the parade is "30 Years of Community Unity". Use the contact form on the website if you need more information about entering. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Peanut Carnival - A classic event for kids ages 3 -10, this event is held at Letort Park. Each child is issued a bag of peanuts and in return they use these peanuts to play different kinds of games and are awarded peanuts when they win these games!

Rotary Roast Beef Dinner - Thursday, July 3rd from 3 to 7 in the Lamberton Middle School Cafeteria (Near Walmart). Beef. It's what's for dinner. Come out and support the Rotary. (cost of $7.50 is involved)

Shakespeare in the Park - New for 2008! Come out and be entertained as local homeschoolers present William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing in the Thornwald park pavillion.
Softball Game- Summerfair Board members and local elected officials will battle it out against a group to be determined at Letort Park.

Swing Dance Lessons & Open Dancing - The Central PA Swing Dance Club (www.centralpaswingdance.org) hosts free beginner swing dance lessons and dancing at their downtown Carlisle studio, The Green Door. Drop by 14 East North Street for a free beginner lesson from 7-8pm. Open dancing to DJ music will follow the lessons. This is a wonderful way to get some exercise, meet new people, and enjoy the heritage of American music and dancing. No partner is necessary and all ages are welcome!

Ten K Run - If you've kept that New Year's resolution, you'll be able to run in the Carlisle Summerfair's 10K run happening from 7-9am on Saturday at the Dickinson College Rush Campus(meet across from the Dickinson Library. Registration starts at 7 in the morning and the race starts at 8, so don't be late. Numerous age groups exist with awards to be given out at the conclusion of the race. Runners and walkers of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Walking Tours of Carlisle - Meet in the square for descriptive tours lead by the group Historic Carlisle. 2008 - French and Indian War related landmarks. Tours leave at 8PM and at 9PM and will be about 45 minutes long.
